Tibet Tour Base

Lhasa:

Lhasa, the heart and soul of Tibet, abode of the Dalai Lamas, an object of devout pilgrimage, is still, a city of wonders. Since the major sacred places such as Potala, Jokhang, and Three Monasteries are located in Lhasa, the township itself has become somewhat the ;Mecca'' of Tibet. Pilgrims crowd the year round. Today, the population has grown into a sizable city of 120,000 people. Climate in summer is one of the mildest in the world, no fear of hot or cold. During the raining season it usually rains at night, and daytime almost everyday is fresh and sunny.In winter during the dead of the night is cold, the temperature drops to about -13c, but daytime still is mild, the temperature rises to about 15c above 0c.The altitude of Lhasa is 3667 meters above sea level.Lhasa is rightly one of the most featured and dreamt-about cities in the world. This is not only because of its remoteness, its high altitude at 3,650 meters (11,975 feet) means limited accessibility, but also because of its impressive heritage of over a thousand years of cultural and spiritual history that has helped to create the romantic and mysterious Tibetan religion.

Tsetang:

Tsetang was the capital of Yarlung and, as such, a place of great importance. In the 19th century it is said to have contained some 1,000 houses, a bazaar, a gompa and a fort. It is now the capital of Shannan (Chinese for 'South of the Mountains') prefecture and the second-largest town in the Ü, region. It is at an elevation of 3,100 metres (10,170 ft) and has a population of about 52,000.[2] It is only about 4 km to the northeast of the town of Nêdong but they have now basically merged into one city. It is situated near the flank of Mount Gongbori [3,400m] and is home to the ruins of the ancient Gajiu Monastery. It is known as the cradle of Tibetan's civilization. Samye, Tibet's first monastery, is located 30 km from Tsedang and was founded in 779 CE by King Trisong Detsen.;

Shigatse:

Shigatse, also named Xigatse, means 'the fertile land'. Covering an area of over 3875 square kilometers (about 1496 square miles), this frontier city is the second largest in Tibet. It sits in the plain at the confluence of the Yarlong Tsangpo and Nyangchu Rivers, where Tibet's most fertile land is to be found. With some thirteen ethnic groups including Tibetan, Hui and Man, Shigatse is a typical living area for minority nationalities. The population of Shigatse City is 98,700 about 97% of which are Tibetan. Shigatse has a history going back more than 600 years and it is this ancient holy city that is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the spiritual leaders in Tibet. The city is also the cultural, economic and political center of Tibet.

Namtso:

Namtso is a mountain lake at the border between Damxung County of Lhasa Prefecture and Baingoin County of Nagqu Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, approximately 112 km [70 miles] NNW of Lhasa.
